Insane Grammar Rant o' the Day
"Dessert" is what you eat after dinner. Unless you are in England, in which case you may call it "pudding," which means dessert that is not necessarily pudding. Though it could be pudding. But it doesn't have to be pudding. You can have ice cream for pudding. Or you could have cake for pudding. Cake with lots of buttercream frosting is good and would be an excellent option for pudding. Or even for dessert.
"Desert" is that place with all the cacti and sand and heat and stuff.
"Just deserts" are what you get when you've been naughty but then karma bites you in the ass. See, 'cuz you're getting what you deserve, get it? You're not getting dessert. You don't deserve dessert; you do deserve deserts, provided they are just.
It's true that sometimes you are good and in return you also get your "just deserts," and I suppose then you would also deserve dessert. That doesn't negate the fact that you should get your just deserts and then maybe also a celebratory dessert.
"Just desserts" is what you say at the restaurant when you want to skip the burger and fries and go straight for the fudge brownie sundae. Perhaps you would do so if you've done something really great and deserve some deserts, and then you're so proud of yourself you go out to get yourself a well-deserved dessert.
"Here's your fudge brownie sundae" is what you say to me when you are trying to make me happy. Fudge brownie sundae, yum.
This post made me hungry.
